TURNER ON THE TERRACE

Pop up art studio in Covent Garden’s Porterhouse Bar

Turner on the Terrace
Brief:
To create a day long art event called Turner on the Terrace to highlight the birth place of JMW Turner (in 1775 Turner was born on the premises of what is now known as The Porterhouse) and to coincide the day with the release of Mike Leigh’s film Mr Turner.

Results: Created a pop up art studio on the Terrace of the Porterhouse Bar in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden. Commissioned four contemporary artists to create live Turner inspired art, designed all the marketing materials for the event including press releases, posters, invitations, t- shirts, four oyster card holders and The Porterhouse newspaper. We received press coverage in the Financial Times magazine How To Spend It, the Evening Standard, The Lady magazine, the cover for the October issue of the Covent Garden magazine, a Tatler Bystander and Chris Burke (one of our artists) was interviewed by Robert Elms on BBC London. We received support from Hummingbird Bakery, Cass Art who gave us 100 goody bags and art materials, Little Peaks  and Covent Garden tube station.

The day was such a success that The Porterhouse have decided to extend the dates to include every Sunday on the Terrace of The Porterhouse from November 9th until December 14th 2014. We have again invited artists to paint live on the Terrace.

Next year Turner On The Terrace at The Porterhouse will be an annual event to celebrate Turner and his work and in 2015 we hope to launch a National Art Competition for The Porterhouse, Alternative Turner Prize.

PRESS RELEASE:

22 October saw the inaugural launch of Turner On The Terrace (TOTT) at The Porterhouse Bar in Maiden Lane. In 1775 Joseph Mallard William Turner was born on the premises on what is now known as The Porterhouse.

The day saw artists ChrisBurke, Magnus Irvin, Ben Tallon and PINS creating Turner-esque images on the terrace of the Porterhouse throughout the whole day. Enthralled onlookers stopped to chat with the artists which helped create the most lively atmosphere. Goody bags and sweet treats were bestowed on every guest entering the Porterhouse and during the afternoon Alisdair Flint from yacht-chandler Arthur Beale gave a talk on ‘Turner and the Sea’. Founder of the Porterhouse Brewing Company, Oliver Hughes kicked off the evening with the opening of the Turner Corner, a space inside the Porterhouse’s new Whiskey Bar dedicated to contemporary art.

Turner never went to a sitting without a bottle of gin and in honour of the great man, Dingle Gin cocktails flowed freely throughout the evening’s celebrations. The art works, which are for sale are currently on display in the Turner Corner.

Turner On The Terrace at The Porterhouse will be an annual event to celebrate Turner and his work and in 2015 we hope to launch a National Art Competition for The Porterhouse, Alternative Turner Prize.

TSB BadgeThe Porterhouse is an Irish bar brewing the finest stouts, ales and lagers in the world all hand crafted in Dublin.
Split up over various levels and based in Maiden Lane the heart of London’s Covent Garden.

The Porterhouse also brew TSB, Turner’s Sticklebract Bitter. Cask conditioned ale named after the artist. A bright traditional ale-style bitter. New Zealand Sticklebract hops deliver fragrant aromatic floral notes counterpointed with a mouth of subtle bitterness. A quaffer. Turner would marvel in its composition.
